Profiles in Courage Research Paper: Statement of Topic

In a complete sentence(s), state the name of the political figure you will research. Also, state the subject about which this figure showed courage.

For example, John F. Kennedy showed courage during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Submit your statement to this blog by Wednesday, October 2.

All students must choose a different politician to research. First-come, first-served. Read through all of the topic statements. If your person is already posted to the blog, you must choose someone else!

Also, be sure to adhere to the requirements concerning which politicians are eligible for research.

  26. Jesse Helms was a U.S. Senator and chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He definitely had courage, but in my personal opinion his views are horrible. The senator was against civil rights, he was very racist, often called a white supremacist, against women's rights, against gay rights, and was often referred to as Senator No and was called a master obstructionist. One of his most controversial acts -which I intend upon discussing in my essay- is when he stalled King's Day in the senate in 1983. This was EXTREMELY controversial: ""I will not dignify Helms' comments with a reply. They do not reflect credit on this body," an angry (President) Kennedy said, adding that what Helms said should be "shunned by the American people, including the citizens of his own state (North Carolina)." Later, Kennedy accused Helms of using "Red smear" tactics." (Washington Post)

She showed courage by stating her beliefs and going against what many Democratic were opposing.
