  2. I think that Mary Anna symbolizes people going crazy after a long time of seeing dead people and killing the others. She symbolizes the fact that war changes people and that it is a weird place. The symbol that she really represents is the respect that you need to give the war or you will become crazy. Mary Anne represents what the men have to go through to stay alive in the war every day.

  5. Mary Anne symbolizes what the war does to you at first you’re eager to be in the war and curious how everything is but then once you actually experience it the war changes you. You’re not the same anymore you realize what the war really is its not all fun and games its true stuff. The war makes you change you know what its like to risk your life and actually have to fight. There is just something about it that makes you realize what its really about. When you come back from the war you are a whole different person…..you’re grown up.

  6. I think that the most important events of this story was Marry Ann and Mark Fossie relationship. This is because he is the reason why she came. While she was there she changed a lot. From being her little girly self to become one of the rough looking greenies. Than she went out one night and never back.

  7. Mary Anne was a symbol of what war will do to people. There she was, this sweet little innocent girl who was bubbly and always giggling yet towards the end of the this chapter she changed into someone who seemed crazy, no one could've guessed it was Mary Anne. She enjoyed the rush of being with the greenies on ambush it was like a drug to her, almost as if she felt alive. Mary Anne did go crazy but I'm almost sure she was the happiest mofo out there. So she symbolizes what the war can do to people.

  12. 2. Mary Anne might be a symbol for what war does to you. In her case, the war made her realize what really important is, for example she does not longer care as much about her outward appearance as she used to.
While being in borderline situations, she discovers who she really is.
She is wearing a necklace made of human tongues, that might symbolize the moral concept has changed.

  17. I think the most important part in this story is when Mark Fossie brings Mary Ann to Vietnam. That is where he made his biggest mistake because when she got there she didn’t want to leave. I don’t understand why she wanted to stay in that awful place and why she joined the greenies and made herself look so bad. She is only 17 years old and she was very pretty and now is the complete opposite.
