  1. Schindler Response
I picked the quote Schindler said, "Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't". To me this shows that you can have power over anyone's life if you kill them or make them do things. Schindler had his pick of Jews that he liked, those of which were not killed because Schindler wanted to save them not kill them, like his plant manager, Stern. And he gave the Jews water when they were in the train cars he took fire hoses and sprayed the cars. Schindler wanted to save the Jews, he did not want them to die.

    1. I agree with this, that he realizes that what they were doing is wrong and he wanted to try to change and do the right thing.

    3. I agree. He was very kind to the Jews. They called his factory a haven and they liked him. He gave them hope during a time when there was no hope.

    4. I agree with your opinion. You explained the quote very thoroughly. I admire him for helping them.

    5. I agree. Schindler was a compassionate man at the end of the film. I believe that at the end if the movie Schindler had learned a big lesson in compassion. In the beginning he was in it solely for the financial gain but by the end he had realized that human life was priceless and worth much much more.

  2. I chose the quote “Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don’t.” This quote was said by Schindler himself. To me this means that there is goodness in everyone that won’t kill when they are given the order to do so. Schindler says this because he doesn’t want any of the Jews to die after he realizes what the Germans are doing is wrong. He would rather keep all of the Jews to save them instead of let them be killed but he would rather keep the ones that are already trained to do his factory work than others who he would have to teach. He was good to them all, he would give them food and drink when they needed it and he wouldn’t let them kill his Jews.

    4. I agree. He was good to the Jews. He spent all of his money taking care of them. This is ironic because at the beginning of the movie all he cared about was money.

    10. I believe that Schindler saw more than financial values in the Jews lives. He saw that they were also human. I believe he was very crafty when stating this quote. He used it to influence his German officer friend. He implied that he would be showing much greater power by sparing the guilty than killing the innocent.

  3. I picked the quote "Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't." This means to me that people are good inside which over powers the bad. He says this because he understands what the Nazi are doing to the jews and wanted to help. It was significant to the film because he would do anything for them and treated them as nice as he could. He wanted to make money but also cared for the health of the jews.

    4. I think Schindler was implying that we, as humans, have control over ourselves to not kill one another. We make our own decisions, and when we are able to control ourselves and our actions, then that is when we truly show that we have power.

  4. "Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't." Oskar Schindler said this. This quote is significant to the movie because many of the Nazis abused their power. This was also the turning point of the movie; Schindler started to have sympathy for the Jews. Schindler also tried to influence the other Nazis to have compassion toward the Jews. This quote applies to life because it is a good definition of power in the current world. It also applies to countries that are at war with each other.

    3. I agree completely with you. It's amazing how Schindler ended up changing. But, too me it should not have took him this long to change. He should not even have had to change because all of this murdering of the Jews could have been prevented. And I agree with you also Sam, I think that they felt they had "power" if they let the Jews that he did not kill see that if he killed almost all of them then he would be known as a "leader."

    4. For him to change he saved a lot of Jews. That right there just shows how he was a good kind person all along. So i agree with you 100%. Great Job.

    5. The Nazis did abuse there power by just killing people whenever they felt like it. I also feel like Schindler could have done a better job of trying to convince the other Nazis to have more compassion for the Jews.

  7. It means that one person could make a difference among thousands of others. That one person could change make a change. I really like these quote because it has a really good meaning to it. If at least one person could make a change then maybe others will follow; thats what i think the quote means. The way it was used in the fiim was Schindler, he tried to save all the jews he could and tried to do good. He was the one person that could change everything.

  8. The quote "Power is when we have every justification to kill and we don't" is said by Schindler to Amon Goeth. They are having drinks late in the evening after a dinner party. If you choose to discuss this quote, think about why Schindler told this to Goeth. What was he trying to convince Goeth to do (or not do)?

    1. Schindler was trying to convince Goeth that he didn't need to kill the jews and he didn't need to beat his maid. He was trying to make him think that if he let them be he would have more power over them. In Schindlers case he had a lot of power over the people working in his factory, and that was because he treated them like people and not animals. His factory was a safe-haven, he was trying to make Goeth see this.

  9. For my quote I chose, “The list is an absolute good. The list is life. All around its margins lies the gulf.” Stern says this quote to Schindler because he has realized that Schindler’s motives are good. Throughout the movie, Stern was unsure if Schindler was trying to help the Jews or if he was only thinking of money. After the two stayed up making this list, Stern realizes Schindler bought all of these Jews to save them and that money was no longer a concern anymore. Schindler put the Jews before his money, for a man of the Nazi party this is a huge sign of a change of heart. The list itself wasn’t literally life, but the purpose of the list saved many lives. The list had the names of the Jews Schindler planned on saving for “work”, therefore the list protected and saved the Jews from a terrible death in Auschwitz. The quote also mentions a “gulf”. The gulf represents the millions of Jews that await death this just shows that the names on Schindler’s list will not replace the horrific fate that the other Jews will face.

    1. I completely agree with you Sam. If only at first Schindler would have realized that it was not about money there could have been so many more Jews saved. It's crazy how many of them died because of this. But, someones life should not be based on a list. No one should die such a horrific death just because someone felt that they had "power" and could be a "leader." That is not a true leader to kill millions of Jews just because. That is evil in my opinion.

  10. "The list is an absolute good. The list is life. All around its margins lies the gulf." I think when Stern said this he was thinking about how many people Schindler saved, compared to how many had died. He realized that Schindler had done these things out of the goodness of his heart, although he tried to make it seem like it was about the money. I think deep down when Schindler's factory open and he saw how happy the workers were he himself began to feel like a better man. He obviously cared for the jews or he would not have given away as much money as he did for them. Stern could see this.

  11. I chose the quote “whoever saves one life saves the world entire”. To me this quote simply means that when you save a life, there’s one less life suffering out there that you saved yourself. Just saving one is better than saving none. To help save somebody’s life is to save someone all together, like saving them all in one.

    3. I agree, but maybe it has a lot to do with Humanity, knowing that someone, if anyone, still has heart and feelings. The Jews felt like there wasn't anything left for them, but Schindler showed them otherwise.

  12. The quote I chose to do is "Whoever saves one life can save the world." In my opinion this quote means that anyone can make a difference if the are truly dedicated to it. It only takes one person to make people either look down on them or look up to them. Once Schindler learned that everything is not always about money and wanted to actually save the Jews he showed that he could make the difference. He saved many lives but he could have saved so many more if he would have just realized that sooner. It only takes one influence to change the world or even change other peoples' opinions. Once people realize that the world can be so much better. This whole problem with millions of Jews being murdered could have been completely avoided if Schindler would have thought about the Jews and what positions they were in and not focused on the money.

    1. I really like your point, Schindler could have saved more people if he had realized it sooner. He even said it himself he could have saved at least 10 people if he hadn't kept the car, and at least 1 person for his pin. Schindler knew he was saving all the people he had working under him. He said he should have sold the car, but if he sold the car he wouldn't have saved all the women that were sent to Auschwitz.

  13. (Whoever saves one life saves the world entire) In my opinion this means not that saving one life will actually save the world but that saving one life shows theres still good left in the world. That is my opinion of the statement! this is used to represent the movie because when all faith is lost they are saved! This proves my point that there is still good in the world. they are saved by Schindler but are liberated by the russians.

  14. I chose the quote, “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.” which means that whoever saves one life is one more life saved instead of none. Schindler’s accountant says this quote at the end of the movie when Schindler is saying that he could have saved more people. This quote can be related to life in many ways. One of these ways is that if everyone was to save just one person that would be one more person than there was before. This quote also can relate to that you only have one life so to save it is the equivalent of saving the whole world.

  15. “Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don’t”. This quote was said by Mr. Schindler I think that this quote is significant to the film because I feel like most of the Nazi’s where killing some of jews just so they could have power over them. I think that Schindler was saying it is harder to not kill then it is to actually kill someone. He is saying its harder to do the right thing its always much easier to just give into your anger then it is to just forgive someone. He was trying to convince Goeth to stop just killing the Jews because they made him anger and to have a little mercy on the Jews. He is also saying just because they have the power o kill somebody doesn’t mean that you have to.

  16. "whoever saves one life saves the entire world". This quote has so much meaning to it. Not all the jews have hope and faith that their gonna live. If they see a nazi saving a jew from death then they might think that there is hope and they need to have faith because he could save them to and they would live.

  17. I chose the quote “Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don’t.” Schindler said this. This quote is significant to the movie because for one reason this is the turning point in the movie. Schindler said this to Amon Goeth. I believe they were having this conversation because Schindler had realized the horrible things that were happening to the Jews that were left in the hands of Amon. He had said this to Amon because Schindler wanted to insure to him that killing isn’t always the answer. He was trying to convince Amon not to kill for no reason, and still think he is the boss. After they had that conversation and Schindler said that to Amon, Anom in fact did change. He became less violent, and realized the damage he has done. Doesn’t mean he stopped killing because of it, just less violent.

  18. The quote “Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't." came from Schindler. I think this quote shows that he wants to be better to the Jew’s. I agree with his quote. You do have all the power that way. It just doesn’t make sense to kill people just to be killing. Eventually he would run out of work force at the killing rate they were doing. I think Schindler finally realized that and felt terrible about him self.

  19. The quote I picked was:
“Whoever saves one life saves the entire world.”
A man named Itzhak Stern said this quote. This quote means that if you are able to save one life, you are actually saving a whole generation of lives because of the fact that more children can be born into the family. I think this quote is very significant to the movie because it is talking about Schindler. He saved thousands of Jews, so by him doing this he, in return, actually saved millions. Jewish people that were saved had a chance to keep their family alive. Each family was able to keep growing bigger because Schindler was able to save that one person. I think it applies to life because it represents that you should do good things for people because it could end up helping them out in the future.

  20. “The list is an absolute good. The list is life. All around its margins lies the gulf.” This quote shows every name of the victims Schindler saved. It is a list of the lives he saved. He gave everyone hope by saving them. Schindler made it seem like it was about business but what he really did was about doing the right thing by saving lives.

  21. I chose the one that says "Whoever saves one life saves the entire world". It means that he who saves one mans life saves other people lives, by him not letting his loved ones down. The one that says this quote is Oskar Schindler's accountant Itzhak Stern. This quote may help us in problems in life. This quote is a really good quote when he said it to Shindler when he leaves at the end of the movie. Shindler was glad to save the lives of thousands of Jewish men and women. He thought he could save more, but Stern said he did good, that it was good of what he did for the Jewish. He risked his life and all his money to save the lives of the Jewish.

  22. I agree, he did start out small and then he stared saving many more. I think he set an example to the others.

  23. “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.” is what Stern said. I think with the cruel punishment the Jews were exposed to, there wasn't any humanity, there wasn't any mercy. They were treated like animals. But, however, Schindler was human and he didn't want to hurt the Jews. He wanted to save them, so by risking his life and money, he did all he could to keep them alive. Stern was telling him by saving lives and showing a form of heart, that Schindler was showing humanity (that he was human), which would be a never ending rescue.

  24. “Power is when we have justification to kill, and we don’t” – Schindler. I think this quote is used to get Amon Goeth to stop killing so many Jews at the camp. It was significant in the film to show how Amon was handling power over the camp. This applies in life to show how easily life can be taken away or kept. I think the quote means true power is in mercy.

  25. "Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't." To me this quote refers to the greater strength that someone is exhibiting when they show self-control. It takes much more strength for someone in power to spare the guilty than punish the innocent. It is very easy to pick on the small and the weak and the people with no power and no means of control. It is also very easy to punish the guilty. We see very little issues with punishing people that wrong us. It takes no great display of strength or power to punish the ones who harm us. It takes great control and strength to forgive and to try to move on. In the long run it;s best to show mercy though. If you harm the the person who wrongs you or hold a grudge you will carry that for the rest of your life and it will do you much more harm than you're wrong doer. It would have shown tremendous power for a member of the German army not to kill an "inferior" Jew. They weren't even considered to be people and the German's despised them so for a German officer not to kill one was a great act of self-control and strength.
