  1. I think that maybe he could have found pout that Ellie lied to him. Cause when she told him the lie he thought everything was going to be okay. But if he found out it was a lie then he might have freaked out and thought something bad was going to happen. Or something really bad did happen.

    1. True. I agree that if he would've found out then he would've acted like a fool.

    2. I agree that he would have freaked out if he found out if his family was not alive but dead.

    4. Madison, I have seen this same response on the Chapter 2 blog. Which question are you answering? It is not clear. You must be more specific in your responses. I think perhaps I am confused because you discuss Elie as a female. He is a boy.

  2. Wiesel is about to die, he is walking towards the fire. As he is walking he see children and babies being tossed into the fire. He can't believe his eyes. He can't understand why all these people are being burned alive. He can't get the image of the babies being burned out of his mind.

    1. I can completely understand why he could not sleep after that. What happened is terrible to read about, let alone to actually see in real life.

  3. Mr. Stein was visiting Elie and his father to hear about how his family was doing. Elie had lied to him and told him that all was well with his wife and children when in reality, Elie did not know. This lie had given Mr. Stein hope. The reason Mr. Stein stopped visiting Elie and his father was because he had found out the truth about his family's fate. When he discovered what had really happened, he was drained of all hope. He gave up and probably allowed himself to be killed.

    1. I believe that the hope of retuning to his family was his driving force. It was what kept him going and when he found out that they were dead he no longer had any desire to live.

    2. I agree with both of you. Mr. Steins only driving force and hope was that his family was okay. When he figured out that they weren't okay, he completely lost everything. Both of you are right, I think he allowed himself to be killed.

    3. I agree that the only reason he kept on living is that he though his family was somewhere out there alive, but once he found out they were dead he had no reason to live.

    7. I agree with you. Elie had given him more hope about seeing his family and when Stein found out the truth, he was heartbroken. All the hope he had, had been drained out from him.

  4. I think he found out what really happened to his family and that Ellie lied to him about it. He most likely killed himself or got himself sent to the furnace to be killed. because there was not a good reason for him to live anymore since his family was dead and there was no one left for him to care about.

    3. I agree too because his family was the only thing he had left and without them he no longer cared to live.

    4. That must have been a hard pill to swallow, finding out that your family was killed. That little bit of hope was definitely gone after he found that out.

  5. Elie stated the he was no longer able to sleep after witnessing the mass murder of babies. They were placed on a cart and lowered into the flames to be consumed and perish. They were burnt alive. The sight of real live human babies being burned as trash greatly disturbed Elie. I believe that the awful fate that the Jewish people were about to suffer really began to sink in when he saw first hand the destruction of those innocent children. There was no longer any hope that the Germans were kind or friendly. After the destruction of the children Elie lost hope.

    1. I agree that that was when Elie and the rest of the Jews had lost hope. Up until then, despite everything they had already been put through, they were still optimistic. After seeing what was really going on, all faith was lost.

    2. If I would have been Elie and had witnessed those children being burned, I would have lost all hope in humanity. It really takes a cruel and cold heart to throw innocent children into a fire.

      Delete
    3. Not only did he lose hope, but I think he gained fear, considering they were little kids and he was young his self. I can only imagine it crossed his mine about being burned alo.

  6. When they first get off the train and head to get there stuff they will need for they camp he sees little kids and babies being burnt alive. He can't believe his eyes and how someone could do that to harmless babies. I think that he just gave up on life since he had nothing to live for anymore and was killed. He did this because he finally heard what really happen to his family so he did not have anything to live for now.

    3. Actually Gracie, he does have something to live for, his father. It is the fact that he has to keep his father alive that keeps him from giving up.

  7. Mr. Stein was a family member of Elie's family. He disappears because he is being deported. I think that Mr. Stein is being deported to work or to be burned. I believe that because that's been happening throughout the story, being sent off to camps and to work.

  8. Elie could not sleep after he saw babies being tossed in a fire. When Elie witnessed the babied being thrown in the fire alive he couldn't get the image out of his head. 1. I agree. It is terrible that people could do such things to children. If I was Elie, I wouldn't be able to sleep either. He was probably afraid of what would become of his mother and sisters after seeing the burning children.

  9. Elie had been lying to Mr. Stein about his family since the day they had met in Auschwitz. When the arrival of the transport from Antewerp, where Mr.Stein’s family lived, arrived he went to see them since Elie said they were doing well. After that he never returned. I think the reason he never came back is because when he met with the new transport, he realized his family was dead, and that Elie had lied to him. The hope of his family being alive is what kept Mr.Stein going, and the fact that they are dead made him lose hope. Mr. Stein gave up, and is probably dead now because without his family, he didn’t seem to have a reason to live anymore.

    1. Even though it was bad that Elie lied to Mr. Stein, he did it for his own good. Elie didn't want Mr. Stein to give up hope, so he gave him a reason to keep living. Mr. Stein even told Elie that he only had hope because his family was alright. Mr. Stein would have been better off if he hadn't found out the truth.

  10. Stein of Antwerp is a relative of Wiesel’s family. He had been deported in 1942, but his family had stayed behind in Antwerp. His family consisted of his wife, Reizel, and his little boys. One day, a transport came in from Antwerp and he received the bad news about his family. Stein’s family was the only thing that had given him hope. He was able to survive at the concentration camps because he had an ambition to one day see his family again. When he received the news about his family, I think he became depressed. This could have caused him to die because he figured if is family wasn’t alive, why should he be alive.

  11. The incident that caused Elie not to sleep was the burning of the children in the inferno. The sight of children being burned alive was horrific to Elie and probably most of the other Jews who got deported to the concentration camp as well. There could be 2 possibilities about why Stein wasn’t coming to visit them anymore. 1, he might have found out what happened to his family and he just didn’t want to come back anymore. Or 2, he died.

    1. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to witness the things that they did. It's a horrible enough thought in itself but to actually see it with your own eyes, it's no wonder that Elie could not sleep.

  12. Mr. Stein visited them often giving them food and talking to them. One day he disappeared and wasn’t seen again. I think he got burned in the crematory. He had been deported before Elie and his father and he looked very weak. The longer you are there the more chance you have of being burned. Plus they wanted strong looking men and he wasn’t because he hadn’t been eating that much.

  13. Stein was a very strong person. He was a relative to wiesels family. Steins family had put a bunch of hope and faith in him. One day he got the news that his family had died. After this news he became depressed and lost all of his hope. Being depressed and having no hope in yourself would cause him to die. He thought if he was the only one on his family living then whats the point of living.

    1. I agree. If I received news that basically all of my family had been killed I would have went into a deep depression. That should not happen to anyone the way it happened to all of those Jews. He probably thought that there was no point in him living anymore because he had no one but himself. And I'm sure he was loosing his faith in God if he had any before.

  14. Elie couldn't sleep because he saw the truck pull up to the fire and start throwing babies and small children into the fire. He couldn't get that terrible image out of his mind so i understand why he couldn't sleep. Stein could've died or got deported to another camp so that's why he didn't go visit them anymore.

  15. The reason why Elie could not sleep because of the all the children being burned up in the Crematory alive. Elie must've been scared to see all that torture that the Nazi's are doing to the Jews. After the incidents Elie lost hope.

  16. The prisoners were made to take off all of their clothes and keep only their shoes and belts. The prisoners with new shoes were made to give them up, but since Elie's new shoes were covered in mud, the officers did not notice them. After that, they were taken to the barber and all of their hair was cut off. The officers threw prison clothes to them as they were running. The officers did not care whether the clothes fit the prisoners or not.

  18. Mr. Stein first came to see them about his family that where not taken to the concentration camp when he was. He asked them if his family was still alive and when he asked Elie lied and said that they where even though he had no clue. He heard that a train was coming in from the town he was from and knew they would have news. I think that he got bad news and his family was dead and lost hope and I think he got taken to the crematory for it.

  19. The incident Elie experience was seeing the children being burned. He could see their faces and he couldn’t stop thinking about whether or not he was going to be burned.

  20. After Elie witnessed those babies and children being thrown into the fire and burning to death he could not go to sleep because that memory stayed haunting him in his mind. It would haunt my mind as well if I had seen something like that happening. Mr. Stein was related to Elie and he disappears because he is going to different concentration camp. In my opinion, Mr. Stein is being transferred because he is going to be killed. Since there are so many people dying or either having to go to another camp to work even harder is my opinion.

  21. Elie witnessed the babies and children being thrown into the fire. He said he could not sleep because the image burned into his memory. Elie and his father's friend Mr. Stein disappeared because he was sent away to another concentration camp. He gave up hope and basically stopped fighting to stay in health so he was sent to his death in the other concentration camp.

  22. Stein was very concerned about his wife and kids, it was no surprise that Elie had told him they were fine. It was the thought of his family being alive that kept him going. If Elie had told him the truth that he knew nothing of his family, I believe Stein would have been over taken with grief. This eventually does happen with the arrival of the next cattle car, he most likely learned terrible news of his family and gave up. He gave up and was most likely picked during the selection.

  23. The prisoners are faced with death and a fire pit in front of them. They are also faced with hunger and starvation and overcrowding. At one time while they were in their bunks they were humiliated by having to take all their clothes off and put on old rags instead. I think Elie’s friend Mr. Stein was killed because he was probably either sick or not of age.

  25. Mr.Stein visited Elie because he was checking on how his family was doing. Elie lied and told Mr. Stein that his family was doing good. But then Mr. Stein found out the truth and lost hope. He stopped visiting because of that. Mr. Stein lost hope and gave himself in
